Our Farm
Porsham is located within the beautiful Tamer valley and has an abundance of small fields and hedgerows all of which were recorded on the 1840 Tithe map. We have over 14 kilometers of hedges, two ancient woodlands and Riparian buffers strips along the stream. We continue to improve the land we care for and aim to compliment the 5 acres of native woodland, we planted in 2011, with some new Agroforestry rows to reestablish a couple of missing hedges from the 1840 tithe map and also some cluster planting to create wood pastures for our cows and pigs.
Will & Tan came home to the family farm in 2003 and our focus has been to create a sustainable and resilient business based on permaculture principles and mimicking nature.
Fields and Biodiversity
Our fields are mostly herbal leys and are small in size which allow us to easily segment them into paddocks for the year round grazing system we employ for our cows.
Currently we support good biodiversity levels with many songbirds, Egrets, Owls – who are quite noisy, a Sparrow Hawk who has moved in and our yearly visitors – the Swallows and House Martins. Insect wealth is great with bees and other pollinators, butterflies include the Speckled Wood, Orange Tip and Small Tortoise Shell and we have also had Clive Turner from www.foundationforcommonland.org.uk survey our dung beetles “I was very pleased to see a healthy abundant dung beetle community busy doing their job”.
We have been in a Countryside Stewardship Mid Tier Scheme since 2015.
We are audited each year by Red Tractor and Morrison’s as part of our Milk Contract.
